Main Tasks:
1) Use this set of world maps to locate Russia. Now, DESCRIBE the location of Russia. Remember to use hemisphere, continent, scale, and compass directions when locating Russia in the world. 2) Now watch the first video Russia Interesting Facts up to 2.00 and read the two independent research links (Nat Geo Kids Russia and The Physical Characteristics of Russia). Use these to WRITE DOWN the key physical geography features of Russia. Don't forget to try the challenge task too! Can you divide these features into those within European Russia and those within Asian Russia? 3) Finally watch the video on Russia's Geography Problem. After you finish watching, PLACE A CROSS on the continuum on the workbook to show the extent to which you think Russia's physical geography is its greatest challenge. You should add an annotation (label) to JUSTIFY your decision. |

Lesson 2: What are Russia's Climate Zones and Biomes?

Main Tasks:
1) READ over the detail about Russia's climate in the dashed box. Pick out two key terms from the box and FIND OUT their definitions. 2) Now use the independent research links (Britannica and World Atlas) to CREATE a small mind map describing the varying (lots of different) climate of Russia. Try to make sure you include details on all of Russia's climate zones. 3) Using the videos (Tundra, Steppe, Taiga) and the BBC details, IMAGINE you are creating a section on what to expect when visiting Russia for a travel guide. You have to DESCRIBE the biomes people could visit and you have to say why they should visit some biomes over others. Can you JUSTIFY your reasons for visiting some biomes over others? Can you think of CRITERIA for visiting and for not visiting (fragile environments, education, to support local communities)? |

Lesson 3: What are Russia's Human Features?

Main Tasks:
1) LOOK carefully over the population density map of Russia. Use what you now know from the map to DESCRIBE which part of Russia is where most people live (remember to use continents, regions, and compass directions). 2) Now use the video links (Why Russia is shrinking fast and Russia's Geography Problem) and the independent research links (World Population Review and Kids World Travel Guide) to COLLECT details on the human geography of Russia in the box provided. Challenge - can you explain why most of the human settlements in Russia are located in Europe? 3) Now, re-watch the video on Russia's Geography Problem. Colour in the extent-o-meter at the bottom of the lesson 3 page to indicate the extent to which you think Russia's human geography is their greatest challenge. Add annotations (labels) to justify your decision. |

1) Use a Google Search to find out where Chernobyl is located. In the box provided on the worksheet, DESCRIBE the location of Chernobyl. Challenge - you may have noticed it is not in Russia - so how is Chernobyl linked to Russia? 2) WATCH the first video (The Chernobyl Disaster) and READ the two independent research links (World Nuclear Association and Live Science). WRITE DOWN in the table provided the causes, effects and responses to this human caused disaster. Challenge - can you divide the effects into social, economic and environmental? 3) Now watch the video from National Geographic about Chernobyl today. SUMMARISE in short points the pros and cons of Chernobyl being a tourist attraction. ADD AN ANNOTATION (one sentence or more) below the scales to explain your overall judgement. |

Russia Assessment Task
Starter:
Read back over all the tasks you have completed over the past 6 lessons and ensure you have completed your Seneca Review tasks as well. Before you attempt this task, watch this video to understand why some people choose to migrate from one place to another. Note: For evidence on this assessment you can - 1) Complete the task and upload completed work to Show My Homework or email to your teacher. 2) If you are really stuck, you can simply complete the tasks on a sheet of paper, take a picture of the assessment work and upload to Show My Homework or email your teacher. |
Main tasks:
1) IMAGINE you have made friends with a young person your age who lives in Siberia. 2) They have asked for your help. They would like to move to Moscow and leave Siberia behind. But their parents disagree. They would like you to help CONVINCE their parents to move. So you will need to use persuasive techniques (rule of three, expert opinion, statistics, adverbs, imperative and direct address). 3) Using your KNOWLEDGE from across the last 6 lessons, first decide if you agree with your friend about moving to Moscow. If you do then you need to WRITE a convincing argument in your letter outlining at least 3 paragraphs of different reasons why they should move to Moscow. If you think this would not be a good idea, you need to WRITE at least 3 paragraphs of different reasons why the should remain in Siberia. If you can see both sides of the argument and think there are convincing reasons to stay in Siberia and move to Moscow, make sure you WRITE 2 paragraphs for each and a third paragraph explaining why you aren't yet sure what they should do. |
